Esta fiesta se celebra anualmente en la ciudad de Pamplona (Navarra). Su comienzo se da a mediodía del 6 de julio con el chupinazo, que consiste en el lanzamiento de un cohete desde el balcón del ayuntamiento de la ciudad, y culmina el 14 de julio a medianoche cuando se reúnen los asistentes en la misma plaza del Ayuntamiento para cantar la canción de despedida, conocida como Pobre de mí. Durante estos días, la población de la ciudad pasa de 190.000 a 1.000.000 de personas. Dato que puede ayudarnos a hacernos una idea de la importancia y el impacto turístico y, consecuentemente, económico de esta festividad.
La celebración se realiza en honor a San Fermín, patrón de la comunidad de Navarra, pero se produce la perfecta convivencia entre la parte religiosa y la fiesta más «juerguista», caracterizada por la consumición de alcohol, la música y las ganas de disfrutar. No obstante, si por algo son los Sanfermines internacionalmente conocidos es por los encierros. Éstos se producen desde el día 7 al 14 de julio a las 8 de la mañana, teniendo una duración promedio entre 2 y 3 minutos. Los encierros consisten en una carrera, que comienza en los corralitos de Santo Domingo, en la que los toros corren por algunas de las calles del Casco Antiguo de la ciudad, siendo acompañados y conducidos por cientos de personas hasta la plaza de toros.
Otros momentos importantes de esta festividad son la procesión y la comparsa. El 7 de julio es el día grande de estas fiestas y se produce la procesión del santo por las calles del Casco Antiguo, al cual acompañan miles de personas vestidas de blanco. Por su parte, la Comparsa de Gigantes y Cabezudos igualmente tiene una gran tradición. Está constituida por 25 figuras gigantes de cartón piedra que cada mañana recorren las calles del centro de la ciudad acompañados de música de gaitas y txistularis.
Por supuesto, estas fiestas también están caracterizadas por las corridas de toros, que todas las tardes cuelgan el cartel de «no hay billetes». Asimismo, durante estos días se puede disfrutar de otros espectáculos menos conocidos como los siguientes: encierrillo, el apartado, desfile de mulillas y caballeros, el estruendo, fuegos artificiales, función de la Octava…
Por último, no podemos dejar de mencionar en este post dedicado a uno de los festejos más conocidos de nuestro país, si no el que más, a la persona responsable en gran parte de su gran propaganda en el extranjero. Se trata del escritor estadounidense Ernest Hemingway, que describió con detalle esta celebración en su libro Fiesta.
